i've read about 50% of the words in this thread but it seems some of you may or may not be missing the point in complaining about the criterion factor, which is SOMEWHAT valid: it's harder to take a movie seriously if it's not on criterion, because almost all the best classic movies are. it's not just wider access, it's making those things the 'only' accessible things. of course, this only works if the viewer is just getting into movies, either literally or they're stuck at that mental stage, but most filmmakers do seem to be at that sort of a... mental level. like, they're idiots, to put it another way.

Just started to go through them, but it is vastly different, far less canon and much more eclectic than the critics and such. The director's overall no. 1 is Tokyo Story but from what I can surmise that is because these lists are tallied by averages -- like I was talking about before. It hasn't been anyone's number one, usually number nine or ten, so there that is...

I saw Vertigo in 70mm at the Castro Theatre last weekend. (I'm not listing rewatches in JW anymore). I liked it better than the first time, but I still don't quite get why it's so rapturously praised. My friend Christopher says it's because I'm not old enough to have made the same mistake twice yet.

I somewhat agree with Dustin's sentiment about Citizen Kane, though turgid might be a harsher adjective than I'd use. But what Vertigo and Citizen Kane share in common, in my view, is a technical virtuosity that perhaps exceeds their intellectual/emotional/etc. significance to me. What I mean to say is I admire them both much more than I love them. Though Vertigo certainly grew in stature on second viewing (I saw it in 70mm at Stanford Theatre the first time, so it wasn't the format or venue that did it).
